Tikkun Olam: Improving and enhancing the world

As a Jewish adult, I must take on the responsibility of helping to make our world a better place. In becoming a Bat Mitzvah, I have decided to commit my time to helping to brighten the day of children being treated for serious illness in my local community.  I recently had the oppotunity to see the Pediatric Emergency Room at Anne Arundel Medical Center - not to worry, I wasn't sick! I was fascinated by the fun colorful decorations there.  My mom explained that by decorating in such a way, it makes the hospital less intimidating especially for young children. It looks like a fun place rather than the scary place that we ofen think hospitals are.

I starting thinking about how sad it would be to have to be stuck in a hospital and what would the kids do while there were there. I mean if they are all sick, they certainly can't play or have have friends over.  So I thought, what would I do...

Well, I'd look for something to help me stay positive - what better than superheroes. I thought maybe I could help to inspire these kids to channel their superhero strengths to get better and get out of the hospital.  So, I am carring my Bat Mitzvah celebration theme - superhero comics - into my mitzvah project.

I am working to collect and raise money to purchase comic books, toys and other superhero inspired items to donate to the hospital.  They are specifically in need of items for pre-teens and teenagers, so I think comic books would be great! I will be using a portion of my gifts to purchase items to donate and will be soliciting donations from stores in my local community, my friends and family, and hopefully you!  You will find a donation box at Temple Beth Shalom on the day of my Bat Mitzvah service and at the celebration following.

Following my Bat Mitzvah celebration, I will be visiting the hospital to deliver the donations and to take a full tour of the pediatric unit. Though I hope to never need the services provided at Anne Arundely Medical Center, I am sure glad they are here in my home town just in case!
